Governing Values

November 5, 2010

What is your Governing Value?

I was listening to a Dr. Jim Binney, a pastor and counselor, and he told a story about time management counselor who was speaking. This speaker had a lady who had a baby on the stage and he asked her, “I have this iron beam and if I put it in front of your house would you walk from one side to the other for a hundred bucks?” she said “yes.” This is before 9/11. he asked “If I took this beam and attach an end one Twin Tower and the other end to the second Twin Tower, those two buildings each have a sway factor of 40 feet that high, would you walk it for a hundred dollars?” she said “No.” He asked, “for a thousand?” answer, “No” “a Million Dollars…? she said “absolutely no!” The speaker said, “Ok, what if I had your baby and i was on the top of the other tower. If had your baby by the heels and I said if you don’t walk across I’ll drop the baby. would you walk it? the lady started to cry.”
Why? He just found her Governing Value, every decision she made ended up coming back to her baby and the baby’s safety. (this is natural for a mother). He had taken her governing value and put it out of her control. This is an example that each one of us has a Governing Factor. the goal that all of are decisions work towards . The question we have to ask ourselves is our Governing factor. the number one governing factor other than God that I have found is Happiness by means of Marriage, Friends, Tv, Video Games, Work, School etc… and all my and your decisions have been or will be for God or our happiness.
The Lord our God will have no other Gods before Him. He who keepeth his life shall lose it. He(God) will tear down all idols sooner or later. What we what more than God we will never get and be happy because only God can give abundant joy.
Some how we all think that there is a specific time where we find happiness that will stay with us till the end of time. Not realizing with the wrong Governing Value we’re like Dan the donkey, in a song called Cool Water, looking for water in a desert of sand and never finding it. God our Savior has Living Water that we may never thirst no more. So the real question is our we willing to give up our “happiness” we think we need to God and humbly accept His plan of abundant Joy

I sometimes wonder whether all pleasures are not substitutes for joy.
C. S. Lewis
